Recycle Community Description

Exploration name: Recycle Community
EXploration Dates: 06 October 2014– 21 November 2014
Number of students: 12
Course Description: Students will work closely with the community to solve their waste management and how to make use of it. In class, students will learn about the effect of waste to living things on the earth, and find solutions to motivate the community to care more about the environment. In order to achieve this goal, students will do a survey in the community to see what are the real problems in the village which is near our school. Then students will do a field trip to interview people from Ministry of Environment and waste collecting company names CINTRI. Students will do Community Project Based which means they will collaborate with the community to separate their waste into three kinds as in Organic, Recycle, and Others. Through these, a community not only benefits for their environment but also improve their living by making compost.

Changing Cambodia 2014-2015

In between 2014-2015 I have four Explorations. In every Exploration, I have learned lots of things and I also helped to change my country. My Explorations was Tech Support (I had it twice), Recycle Community and Entrepreneurship. In Tech Support class I went to Singapore to study technology with UWCSEA students. UWCSEA stood for United World College South East Asia. My group also helped to fix other NGO computers. We went to Takeo to fix some computers for Green Umbrella, Chbar Ampov Market to fix the computer for Tiny Toones and teach their students how to use a computer. Our team also fixed another 5 computers that QB have donated to us. After we fixed QB computers we didn’t keep to use by our self but we also donated it to other NGO. There are more things that we did in this Exploration. The next Exploration was Recycle Community. In this Exploration, we focused on plastic and other wastes. We went into the community to ask some questions to community people about plastic and waste. Example: What will you do after you use all the plastic bag? Do you recycle your plastic or waste? Do you use another thing to pack thing instead of plastic? etc…After we did this survey we came up with an idea to a created new thing from plastics and made a lesson plan for community people. We have invited some community people to our school and taught them how to recycle the plastic and other materials. We also went to Ministry of Environment and Sinty to study more and knew more how the plastic waste and another waste effect to the environment. Next Exploration is Entrepreneurship. In Entrepreneurship, we focused on business and a 3D printer. In this group, I had help, other people, to make their own styles by using my pendant. They could make anything from my pendant. Example: make necklace, bracelet or keychain. This all the things that I had help and changed Cambodia. If I only help one part in Cambodia but I’m happy. I hope in the future the people that I have help can continue to practice their computer skill and try to make other styles from my pendants. Now I and other people in my team are working on coding and designing an app to help Cambodian people to know more about plastic. This project happens at Development Innovation. It is one of the competitions for Cambodian girls. If we win this competition we will put our app online, then other people in Cambodia can use. My teams and other teams have working on it for three months. The benefit of our app is to teach people, especially household and the people that have a smartphone, android to manage their waste. Our app also has video that is used to teach other people how to make a new thing from plastic and other wastes. Our user can post their own video or photo that are related to the recycling things. They also can get the point and like from their friends and they can use their point to buy cloth for their avatar and other things that we have put in our app. I hope my app is the winner and I hope there are lots of people use my app. There are more thing that I want to continue helping to change Cambodia. The most thing that I want to change for now is Education in Cambodia. As you know Cambodia is the developing Country. If it develops, but it only develop in one place or it only develops at the fancy city or provinces. I can see that there are more children that need help from the organization and other NGO. I know that they have a chance to study but they didn’t get a chance to study new thing and have a chance to raise their own idea up and play or study about their idea. In the future, I want to spend my whole time in my Exploration or other class with other students from other place and teach them what I have learned and what are the new things that they can try.

Tech and Engineering Description

Name: Tech and Engineering
Learning Facilitator: Max
Number of Students: 13
Date: 11 August-17 October 2014
Days we meet: Monday-Tuesday

Course Description: On the first day of Tech and Engineering, we learned about engineering. Its definition is solving problems by using math, science, technology, and creativity. On the next day, we started to learn about the process of engineering. It is called the 5D. First, we discover what is the problem. Then, we define the problem. Next, we can design the solution. After that, we develop the plan. Deploy means improve our plan. We had to engineer the chair for the bear. The chairs for the bear were made from Legos. It was the first challenge for the class. One of the criteria was to make the chair so that when the bear sat on it, it does not fall. We also engineered the robot. We learned a lot about programming.

Tech Support Description

Exploration Name: Tech Support
Learning Facilitator: Max
Exploration Dates: August 13-Oct 3, 2014
Number of Students: 12

Description: Tech Support was the first Exploration of the second year. In Tech Support we learned about technology and helping other organizations, NGOs, and Liger with their technology problems. On the first day Max, our facilitator taught us a little bit about the ideas that he made this Exploration. On the next day, we started to learn more about technology. We learned about the parts of computers (hardware). On the second week, we had a trip to Singapore! Before that day we prepared our clothes in our backpacks. When we arrived at the airport our parents came to say goodbye to us. We were so sad but we were also happy. On the plane people were talking to each other, some people hurt their ears because it’s hard to hear up there in the sky. When we arrived in Singapore we had to wait for the checker to check our passports. After we finished the check step there was a big surprise for us because Robert (the former head of Liger) came and was waiting for us. He came and said hello to us, we were shocked. About 15 minutes later we went straight to UWCSEA South East Campus. We went there because we want to collaborate with them so we can help NGOs and organizations in Cambodia. There were seven members that worked with us. The first day that we met them we played some games to know and get familiar with each other. Then we found out our host family that we were going to sleep with for two days. Our host families were so friendly and kind. We went there and learned with an IT expert more about the hardware of the computers. On the third day, we camped in UWCSEA. Also, we went to the science museum to learn and have fun. Sadly on Wednesday, we had to leave Singapore. When we came back we went to two organizations to help them. One of them is Tiny Toons. They have problems with their computer. We took five computers to fix at Liger. Luckily we fixed two of them already! The other organization is Green Umbrella, and they have a problem with their website so we helped to fix it.

Infographics 1 Description

Advanced Enrichment Name: Infographics 1

Learning Facilitator: Jessica

Number of Students: 13

Advanced Enrichment Dates: August 12-Oct 17

Days We Meet: Thursday and Friday

Course Description: In Infographics class we learned about what does infographics mean. Infographics mean the way showing information as a chart or diagram. In Infographics we learned to look at the pictures to understand the information and we were so excited to get a chance to looked at an infographic because it was our first time to look at infographics by our own. When we first looked at infographic we got a little confused but the strategies are sometimes to look at the arrow. Infographics might have a lot of pictures but some don’t have a lot of pictures. The pictures that we looked at were about the Earth like when the animals die and decompose and become gasoline or gold. We even looked at infographics about acid rain. At the end of our Advanced Enrichment, we made our own infographic about Liger as the same as 100 people. We made our own infographic because we wanted other students and visitors to get some information from our infographic.

Zoology A Description

Name of Course: Zoology

Learning Facilitator: Jojo

Number of Students: 12

Dates: Jan. 19 – March 27

Days we Meet: Monday and Tuesday

Course Description: In our class, we learned about the animals, for example, bacteria is the first organism that has lived on Earth. We learned about different kinds of organisms that live in the world, for example, in the ocean, there are different kinds of living things like starfishes and turtles. After that, we learned about invertebrates and vertebrates. Invertebrates are the organisms that don’t have a backbone. Vertebrates are the organisms that have a backbone. Ex: cow have a backbone, the sponge doesn’t have a backbone. We learned about marine animals and territory animals. Marine are the organisms that live in the ocean only. Ex: Octopus is a marine animal. A territory is the organisms that live on land. Ex: cats are the territory animals. In the water, there are a lot of insects. We learned how the insect’s metamorphosis. Metamorphosis means change. We learned about the metamorphosis are about their life cycle. In class, we learned a lot of things most things that we learned are the mammals. Mammals are the organisms that have a baby in their belly and give their baby a milk like a human.

Khmer History Description

Name of Course: Khmer History

Botany 2 Description

Name of Course: Botany 2

Learning Facilitator: Jojo

Number of Students: 9

Dates: October 20-January 16

Days we Meet: Thursday-Friday

Course Description: In our Advanced Enrichment we learned about botany. Botany means learning about plants. Plants are the only organisms that can make their own food and that’s called sugar or glucose. Plants make their own food is called photosynthesis. Photosynthesis means plants take sunlight to make their own food. Plants make photosynthesis on the leaves. The organ in leaves works to make the food. In leaves have chloroplast and in chloroplast have chlorophyll. Plants take the carbon dioxide and layout oxygen. During the day, they do photosynthesis. Plants have physical features. There are roots, stem, leaves, fruits, and flowers. In the stem, there are two tubes. The first tube is for sucking the food or it’s called nutrients and the second tube is for sucking the water. In our class we had the activity is growing the plants. Our resources were paper, plastic bag, water, and seed. First, we needed to soak paper with water but not very wet and put the seed in it. Rub it not too tight and put in plastic bag. The plastic bag needed to be open for oxygen get in it and put at the place that has a sunlight. We need to put the water unless the paper is dry. When the seed germinates like come out the stem, leaves, we take out from the paper and put in the soil.
