Rabies is a viral disease that causes inflammation of the brain in humans and other mammals. Rabies transmission can occur through the saliva of animals and less commonly through contact with human saliva. In Cambodia, there are 600,000 dog bites per year and 60% of them are children under 17 years old. Institut Pasteur du Cambodge, is one of our partner had come out to our school and did a short presentation about Rabies. It is very impressive to meet them as well as knowing that they are the only organization that give out Pre- and post-exposure vaccination to people all around Cambodia. In addition to this, we also meet the other two organization which are Animals Rescue Cambodia (ARC) and Phnom Penh Animal Welfare Society (PPAWS), whose are working closely with animals. We got a chance to travel down to Mondulkiri with PPAWS and held a Rabies campaign there for two days. We gave out rabies vaccines to dogs and cats as well as desexed them in order to keep control of their population. On the 7th of February our students with ARC, held another campaign nearby to provide a free vaccination to dogs and cars. We did around 170 dogs & cats in totals for just one day which is a really good sign for us.
